Peer coaching

Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus is a predatory bacterium that burrows through the outer membrane of prey bacteria and siphons out the cell contents. Similarly, stress, anxiety, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome burrow into our minds and prey on our confidence, our joy, and our ability to be happy and productive at work.

This is a deeply challenging time to be an Early-Career Researcher.

There are far more PhDs awarded each year than there are postdoctoral positions available, and there are even fewer new group leader opportunities. Fellowship review committees often rely heavily on publication-based metrics to rank applications, feeding the “publish or perish” culture.

In such an environment, how do we find our joy? How do we stay in touch with the passion and curiosity that brought us to research in the first place?

I offer peer coaching to help graduate students, postdocs, and other early-career researchers overcome these difficulties, nurture self-confidence, and build their portfolios of skills and achievements. Although I specialize in the biosciences, everyone is welcome. Topics include:

  • managing stress – physical and mental wellbeing
  • figuring out your writing process
  • overcoming imposter syndrome
  • managing professional relationships (e.g. with your PI)
  • increasing confidence with data analysis and statistics
  • selling yourself – grants, applications, job interviews
  • building a strong CV – cultivating and selecting opportunities
  • navigating career choices
  • Practice your PhD defense / viva with me!

Do any of these sound like areas you find challenging, or where improvement would really boost your career? Write to me to arrange a free initial peer coaching session.
